I've tried 10000 strategies Here's what I do daily now
If I had a dollar for every strategy I ever learnt, I'd be rich.
Or, if I got back all the money I'd ever spent on strategies or fixing me, I'd be richer.
I'm a therapist who's learnt at least 234,345,634,22,6644, 3455 strategies, tools, and practices to fix things.
Ten years of sitting with clients.
$$$$$$ on professional development.
Hours and hours of advanced training.
A Master's Degree.
Eastern philosophies.
Chakra opening ceremonies.
Segueways into quantum healing,
intuition and manifestation.
Kinesiology.
A Balinese diaphragm healer who turned up in an 80s leather bomber jacket, smoking.
Loved that guy, had a great time, it didn't heal my anxiety.
All the things,
To regulate.
To analyse.
To understand.
To 'heal'
To pull things out at the root.
To find the theory that explains it.
As a therapist, I know all the strategies.
I'm also a busy-minded, creative founder with a small business, a team of therapists, 1000s of clients under my care at my Private Practice, an email full of business expenses, and a mind that constantly narrates how each moment could be a muse-letter.
I too have the urge to fix my inner world, all the parts of me swirling at once.
I too buy into this silly idea, often, that we're all meant to be nervous system regulated swans just gliding around through life not feeling anything too strong or too un-ladylike.
It's a bit unrealistic, isn't it?
Gab-Mind, please, shush.
I know you too, have tried lots of things:
You tried to drink it away.
Sex it away.
Change it with your hair.
Thought a new dress would make it better.
Tried to work it away.
(Ok now I'm actually singing- an ode to one of my favourite Beyoncé-adjacent songs here.
None of these are bad, and many are helpful.
Explore far and wide, find what works for you.
What I want to offer today, is what I'm grounding into lately.
And what I've found lately is great relief in not having to fix anything.
A practice, grounded in my beloved Internal Family Systems training.
A practice that I've come to call a daily 'Roll Call.'
Somehow, by just knowing who's in the classroom today, everyone settles.
Everyone feels heard.
Everyone sits down.
Noone needs to leave.
Noone needs to be fixed.
And I can breathe again.
Try the practice with my "Climb into your Treehouse Meditation"
Let's do it together.
